There’s nothing too ‘cosy’ about Lucy Worsley’s riveting biography on the life and works of Agatha Christie. At times, Christie’s life was as adventurous as the characters in her novels, including that incident were she went missing for several days, sparking a nationwide search and endless speculation. Despite loving many of her novels, I may have been guilty of underestimating her as a literary figure. This portrait of Christie, however, has made me view her in a new light, as a modern woman, ahead of her times in many ways, resilient, complex and determined. The Murder of Roger Ackroyd, one of my personal favourites, subverted the crime genre and set her apart from her contemporaries. Worsley has a gift for bringing her subjects to life and for revealing their humanity in an accessible and entertaining way. Be warned – you’ll be tempted to source more Agatha Christie books for the to-be-read stack!
